about the cover

The cover illustrates the place of origin of Frankfurt School style Critical Theory, that is, the Institut für Sozialforschung under the Johan Wolfgang Goethe-Universität in Frankfurt am Main, Germany. A school of thought that emphasizes an interdisciplinary approach to the material struggles of human existence. More specifically, the grid lines of the map penetrating inside the square symbolizes the critical role of reason: philosophy as self-reflexive and receptive to new ways of thinking. It shows that, despite the chaos and disorder, there lies an opportunity for territorialization and becoming. In a sense, the cover then signifies the emancipatory potential of philosophical critique that is not enclosed in its theoretical borders, but, instead, embraces praxis as its actualization towards social transformation and justice.
